About Shape Architecture Haywards Heath

Shape Architecture is a Chartered RIBA architectural practice based in London, working in the design and construction of private residential projects throughout and across London and the South-East, including Haywards Heath, West Sussex. We pride ourselves on the speed of our delivery and our fine attention to detail and technical competence, and can boast an extensive portfolio of completed work ranging from simple rear and side or kitchen extensions to full basement conversions and extensive alterations to listed buildings.

Planning Permission in Conservation Areas

As well as work creating extensions to listed buildings in London and the South-East, we have also achieved planning permissions to other challenging projects, such as a double basement in a London conservation area or in the Sussex green belt, and our Haywards Heath architects bring over fifteen years of expertise in sustainable design to any project.

Contemporary London Based Architects in Haywards Heath

Our London architecture is contemporary and addresses the issues of light, space, and transparency, as well as exploring the physical and visual connection between internal and external spaces. As architects in Haywards Heath, Shape Architecture London was asked to bring our expertise in private residential projects to a vacant plot on the site of a former paintworks in between two residential streets. Drawing on our experience working in apartment buildings, we were able to come up with a contemporary and dynamic design that was presented to the client as a feasibility study and outlying concept. With two banks of apartments clad in waves of timber and joined with a central atrium, the project would have been a suitably striking and modern solution to the unusually shaped plot.

Roof Lights for Basement Extensions

As a London based architectural firm working in designing contemporary conversions and extensions, Shape Architecture always looks to create modern and open interiors filled with light that promote a good connection between both interior and exterior spaces. To this end, we consider and examine the context of every project with regards to both the inside and outside of the existing environment. Drawing outside light into the interior space is particularly important when converting or excavating a basement under a property, where natural light is key to the enjoyment of a space. To get the light into basement extensions we will often use a series of light wells and roof lights across the depth of the floor plan; typically at the front, rear, and sometimes in the middle of the property.

Basements Filled with Light

These light wells either at the rear or in the middle of the property are often combined with a glazed or transparent bridge across them. This not only allows access between parts of the property, but also brings light and a sense of openness into the basement rooms of a property, even at lower level, and can additionally be found as part of a feature staircase when used within the interior of a project. These staircases are a fine way of creating a full-height light well and drawing light into all storeys of the property from the very top of the building, particularly when they can be used as a focal point and attractive feature for the project.

Apartments Planning and Design Experience

This approach to light is typical of Shape Architecture’s work in London and the South-East, where we have a proven track record working successfully with planning departments and have a great deal of experience gaining planning permissions for challenging developments. Whether we are making alterations to listed buildings, designing a double storey basement excavation, an extension to go with a full house refurbishment, or a new build apartment building, we can draw on our design background and technical expertise to make your project a success.

Architectural Visualisations

On all projects, Shape Architecture London use 3D modelling techniques to communicate effectively and clearly with both clients and contractors. Computer models are useful for the design process in many ways, providing an excellent opportunity to produce interesting images through which the client can engage with the project. This in turn is important for our client relationship. Such images can quickly and clearly give an impression of the proposed design that drawings and words alone cannot always convey, and they are a good way of understanding the use of space and sense of light in a scheme, particularly with designs where an existing building could make any changes difficult to visualise mentally.

Recommended Architects in London and the South-East

We work hard with our clients at all stages of the design process and throughout construction, and this fine attention to detail and determination to communicate effectively and clearly has resulted not just in the success of our past projects, but also in ensuring that the majority of our work now comes through client recommendation – a commendation that we are all proud of. With an extensive portfolio of previous projects ranging from full house refurbishments or basement conversions to contemporary extensions and pod rooms, we were able to illustrate a wide variety of design issues and how to deal with them.

We are always happy to meet with a client for an initial free consultation.
