London Garden Studio
Shape Architecture has just submitted a planning application for a 2 storey garden studio in Highgate. This follows a positive and supportive Pre-App process. In contrast to other garden studios we have designed throughout London, including another 2 storey garden studio in Hammersmith, this two storey garden structure already existed but was beset with design and technical problems and as such barely used by our clients. A poor layout, limited headroom, difficult to access from the main dwelling and damp issues throughout are a few of the problems that had to be addressed. The solution sees an elegant copper clad dormer added to the front elevation which provides the headroom needed and ensures that all of the upper floor level is usable. A landscaped route from the main dwelling to the garden studio makes it far easier to access. A lowered terraced zone around its garden perimeter means that the walls are no longer retaining a large amount of soil and so no longer damp. This also allows larger deeper windows to be formed.
2 Storey Garden Studios in London
Clearly 2 storey garden studios are challenging from a planning perspective. Our 2 storey garden studio in Hammersmith is a very successful planning permission given that in addition to the new 2 storeys it also has an enclosed glazed link back to the client’s flat. This provides all year access in a space that itself is large enough to sit and look at the garden. There cannot be many garden structures in London with such a beneficial arrangement.

Other than these 2 storey garden studios we have designed numerous other bespoke garden rooms throughout London. Another very successful project is our Fulham garden studio in Acfold Road. Here the garden studio is formed in brick with much care and attention paid to the brick detailing. Particularly the details over glazed doors and screens which were themselves designed with narrow frames to contribute to the simple and elegant design. The studio itself is flooded with light through a series of roof lights. It is a lovely place to sit and work.
