Clapham Architects

Shape Architecture is currently undertaking the full refurbishment of a substantial family home on Elms Road, just moments from Clapham Common. Following a competitive process involving several local practices, we were selected for our proven ability to transform existing homes into bright, contemporary living environments with intelligent use of space and light.

This property, having undergone several smaller interventions over time, lacked a clear architectural vision. Our role has been to bring cohesion to the interior through a carefully considered redesign.

At the heart of the project is a striking new staircase. By replacing the former enclosed stair with one that features open risers and is enclosed in internal glass, we are not only improving vertical circulation but also bringing light deep into the centre of the house — particularly the basement level, which previously suffered from a lack of natural light. We’re exploring additional design features such as an internally lit opaque glass wall, designed to create a glowing focal point and enhance the sense of openness.

Elsewhere, the existing conservatory is being replaced with a more refined and minimal glass extension, combining slimline framing with frameless glazing in collaboration with Maxlight.

The scheme also includes upgrades throughout, such as improved storage solutions, the redesign of bathrooms, and the introduction of en-suite facilities to better suit modern family life.
