Kensington Architects
Working as architects in Kensington and Chelsea we have undertaken a broad range of residential projects both in type and size since we were established in 2006. A key project of ours is at Adam and Eve Mews. Here we transformed a mews property with the addition of a basement extension and roof terrace alongside the full remodelling of the interior. Planning permission was granted at our first attempt. As a practice that has gained planning permission for many basements and roof terraces throughout London this was an ideal project for us.
Kensington Mews Basement Extension
The addition of a basement adds valuable floor space to this mews property . Only the addition of a basement level would do this. The space is open, ligiht filled and well-integrated with the floors above. Structural glass panels and an open stair void help bring light into the basement and give a sense of volume. An elegant and sculptural stair carried up to the roof terrace serves to integrate all floor levels.
Kensington Roof Terrace
The addition of a roof terrace adds valuable outdoor space. Only the addition of a roof terrace would do this. A feature glazed box where one side slides over the other provides access the roof terrace. This is a distinctive way to access a roof terrace and sits well with the creative design of the stair.
Stair Design
The stair design is very important in the success of this basement and roof terrace project. In terms of location the corner of the property made most sense, in order that it would not ‘bite’ into the floorspace above. But it is not ‘lost’ in the corner. Its form and material ensure it is a feature of the project. As a practice we very much enjoy the design of stairs.
If you have a mews project you are considering we would be very happy to discuss this with you.
