London Basement Extension and whole house project.
Our basement extension in Ellerby Street in Fulham remains a favourite project. The success of this project is in its integration of the basement extension with the ground floor and the garden. The flow between these spaces works very well. Equally important is the extensive use of glass in a number of ways. These elements come together at the rear lightwell. Here a glass bridge spans the lightwell connecting the ground floor with the garden beyond. An elegant stair set within the lightwell connects to the side of the glass bridge and links the ground floor with the basement level. The stair is detailed with a glass balustrade adding to the composition oof glass in this area. Adding reflections too. Giving onto the lightwell at basement and ground floor levels are a sets of glazed sliding doors. These again introduce further elements of glazing to this area. The sliding doors are specified with a thin frame and this adds further elegance to the composition of glass.
London Basement Extension Design
The design of these components was carefully considered at each key stage. At the early concept design phase of the project a 3D computer model was used to explore various design proposals and communicate these clearly to our client. Once the design was agreed with our client and planning permission granted we then moved onto the detailed technical development of the scheme. This is a key part of any project as it is important that the elegance of the concept design is not compromised in its technical development. Here our experience as practice in designing and building with glass serves to ensure a successful project. We enjoy long standing relationships with glazing companies and this is an important factor.
If you have a project where the use of glass would be a feature please do not hesitate to contact us at Shape Architecture. We would be happy to discuss this with you.
