Planning Permission in Brighton
Shape Architecture has received its third planning permission in Brighton since the start of the year. This one is a significant permission for a property in a prominent Conservation Area. Gained at our first attempt.
The project is in Ship Street next to the Hippodrome. The house is very interesting with an existing vaulted basement. However this space is barely connected to the rest of the house. At ground floor the layout is muddied and really too small to function well as a kitchen, living and dining room. At first floor there is a lack of storage and the bathroom layouts are poor. The existing loft is compromised by poor headroom.
Shape Architecture was selected based on our reputation for transforming properties of all types allied to our experience of working in Conservation Areas throughout Brighton and Hove.
The design approach focused on the interlinking and flow between spaces alongside maximising opportunities to bring daylight into the interior and opportunities to add storage.
The key proposal is the addition of a single storey rear extension which adds the valuable space missing at ground floor and importantly allows a stair to be incorporated linking the vaulted basement with the ground floor. Located below a new roof light to the extension, the stair void floods the basement with daylight. The new stair is a striking feature of the project.
The first floor sees a reworking of the bathrooms to incorporate more storage.
The loft is made a far more usable space with the addition of several dormers and roof lights.
This project certainly transforms a distinctive home and fully realises its potential .
