Our Client at Brunswick Terrace writes:
Jason is great! He helped us scope out our new home (which needs a ton of refurbishment) in Brighton by patiently going around and looking at potential houses with us. He helped us with legal questions and preliminary plans and gave us excellent advise recommendations. He was so very patient too, even with our often un-punctual estate agents and bad directions, he took it all in stride. He is a real pro and his work is exquisite, check out his website! I can’t recommend him highly enough, especially if you are in the market for a new home. He’s also very clear about his fees, etc, which is not always a given. Choose Shape Architecture, they are the best!
Internal layout redesign
Two adjacent rooms have been formed into one dramatic space, from which a living, kitchen and dining room is created. This principle room now has great impact with the focus of Hove Lawns and the added benefit of light from the rear lightwell. As with many of our Listed building projects in Brighton and Hove, this project benefits from a well established process of discussion with the planning office and Heritage team via a pre-app submission, followed by a Listed Building application.
The addition of a WC in the Hallway and an En-Suite to a further bedroom, all contribute to a successful project. In addition various elements of inappropriate development are removed, to contribute to a project with great sense of its heritage value.
Shape Architecture works on listed buildings throughout Brighton and London. This diversity in building type and location is of a great benefit to all our Clients.
We have a well established relationship with the heritage department in Brighton. Our range of successful listed building projects in Brighton and Hove is based on this experience, and in particular, a thorough understanding of the process which is particularly detailed. A key element in each application is our demonstration of a full understanding of the heritage value of each property, its history and the way in which historic mistakes can be righted. Our work in this context is nonetheless contemporary and characterised in the creation of light filled elegant spaces. Our expertise ranges from the creation of a contemporary apartment in the Grade 1 listed Brunswick Terrace in Hove to a large roof terrace to the famous Grade 2 listed Florin Court in Westminster and much besides. Working with listed buildings is complex and to maximise the potential that each project offers it is essential to work with an experienced architect.
Summary
Listed Building, Hove
The success of this project is more than the transformation of several small rooms into one large contemporary space offering views over Hove Lawns. It is achieving this in Brunswick Terrace, one of Hove’s most significant listed terraces and achieving planning permission at the first attempt and to time. What might have been a difficult process for our clients was straightforward. Our experience of working with listed buildings throughout both Brighton and London benefits all our clients and this is both from an understanding of the particular issues relating to working with listed buildings and long established relationships with planning heritage teams.
How to Transform a Listed Building
The process of working with the planning authority is key. Demonstrating a detailed knowledge of the heritage asset we are working with is an important part of the Design and Heritage Statement we produce as a part of the planning application. We find prior to the listed building consent application being submitted a Pre-App process is very useful whereby we can submit several design options and receive valuable feedback from the Heritage Team.
Examples of Listed Building Projects
