    Brighton Extension and Internal Refurbishment

Shape Architecture has been working on a house extension and refurbishment project in Balfour Road, Brighton.  The property is a typical terraced house with a poorly lit lower ground floor.  Our brief was to open the floorplans at each level to bring more light in and create a contemporary house with better connections to the garden which we have also designed for our clients.  Glazing is used in a variety of ways to add views and flood the space with natural light.  Other devices are employed such as the cutting away the ceiling to the rear outrigger to reveal the sloping monopitch roof which creates a larger volume and allows rooflights to light this space.  Throughout the upper levels of the house, we have improved the layout and amount of storage space.

We have produced a series of design options for our client in both 2D and 3D modelling, with the addition of several one-to-one meetings where we have taken a laptop along and explored the 3D model with our Clients.  Once the preferred option was selected, the scheme went through a pre-app submission to the planning authority, which is an excellent method to gain valuable feedback from the planners prior to the full application is submitted.  We are now awaiting the planning decision in which is due in several weeks time.
