    New Terrace in Brighton

This project in the Hanover area of Brighton sees a terrace added to an upper floor of an existing terraced house.  Whilst a number of other properties in the area have had similar terraces added over time, very few of them have planning permission.  Our client chose Shape Architecture because of our experience in roof terrace design and the number of projects we carry out in the Hanover area.  We are presently working on three other projects near this property.  We obtained planning permission at the first attempt and are now working up the technical design.  A key planning issue was the potential for overlooking neighbouring properties.  Here in discussion with our case officer the side balustrade panels were increased in height with the sides pulled a short distance away from the party wall line.

The Area of Hanover in Brighton

Hanover is an area in the city of Brighton and Hove.  The exact boundaries of the neighbourhood of Hanover are generally thought of as the area running up the hill to the east of the Level, towards Queen’s Park Road, bounded on the north by Elm Grove and on the south by Sussex Street.  The character of the area is streets tightly packed with Victorian terraces.  Queens Park is a nearby resource.  The area is not far from the university nor the mainline railway station and this serves to determine the range of residents.  Working as architects in Brighton we enjoy projects in Hanover and have undertaken many over the years.  As a practice we enjoy the potential to transform these properties into light filled contemporary homes.  The area has a strong sense of community and we welcome the opportunity to work on projects in Hanover.
