Private Residential | Rear Extension

Working as Brighton Architects we have a varied portfolio of private residential projects. Barclay Cottages, now granted planning permission, is an excellent addition to this portfolio.

It’s a small project with a big heart. The addition of an extension with a green sedum roof and the creation of a triple height space over a relocated stair has totally changed this small house.

No project too small for Shape Architecture

Shape Architecture constantly takes on small residential projects and we very much enjoy how a few small changes can have a dramatic effect. If you have a similar project in mind please feel free to contact us to discuss your plans.

Creation of a triple space height

On entry the overriding feeling is one of a spacious and light filled interior. A simple Velux rooflight floods the stair void with natural light. The new stair is elegant and sculptural, formed in oak with open risers and a glass balustrade to bounce light around. Views from the first floor are much improved with the addition of the Sedum roof, providing an increased sense of a garden space to this small plot.

Summary

Small Rear Extension in Brighton

The success of this project can be seen in its transformation of a very small house into a family home.  Giving our clients years of future enjoyment in what is a very interesting property.  A simple rear extension coupled with the relocation of the stair achieve this.

How to design an extension in Brighton

The value an extension adds  is clearly more floor space but it is also more natural light and a feeling of a greater volume alongside an improved link both physical and visual between the inside and the outside.  A simple roof light centred on the roof will bring a great deal of light into the space.  The size and number of roof lights is a key consideration.  Equally important is the extent of the glazed doors and these may be sliding or bi-folds.  Perhaps consider thinner glazing frames for a greater sense of elegance.  Typical glazing frames are around 46mm wide and a thinner one is half the width.  They will cost more.

Example of Brighton Extensions

Shape Architecture has designed many extensions in Brighton which address these issues.
