Basement Vaults in Notting Hill

Located in Ossington Road in Notting Hill this basement project focussed on the use of the existing impressive vaults. Given their geometry and feeling of weight we decided to design an elegant lightweight stair, which would be suspended from the vaults. This would provide a good composition of geometry and material and an exciting way of accessing the basement. As with all of our projects we explored the design using a mix of hand drawing and 3D models which were a great benefit to our Client.

Summary

Proposals for a new way to access an existing basement in Westminster

The success of this basement project is in the strong concept.  A new route to access the basement was explored via the existing vaults and this set up an interesting composition of heavy vault and light and elegant stair.

Guide to Stair Design

One of Shape Architecture’s strengths is the design of feature stairs.  Creative and elegant additions to a home.  In the design of a stair, a series of decisions with a clear hierarchy present themselves.  Firstly the location and form are important and in particular how the stair sits in relation to rooflights and therefore how views of the outside work.  We have designed stairs within glass cubes.  Important also is the material and the detail design.  For example what material is the balustrade made from and in respect of detailed design, how are the treads and risers detailed.  Are the risers open for example?
