A side return is a very popular form of extension for terraced houses, as it utilises what is often poor quality external space without sacrificing garden space, to create a large contemporary kitchen and dining room. A relatively small extension they nonetheless serve to transform a property. They can also be combined with rear extensions to form a wrap-around extension.

The addition of a side extension widens the floorplan to create a simpler more elegant kitchen and dining space where often there had been several small rooms. Views and also access from the front reception room can also be created forming a far improved flow between spaces.

The wider floor plan and developed rear elevation gives the opportunity to connect the interior both visually and physically with the outside space through the introduction of glazed doors and screens. Sliding doors are an elegant solution. Glazed screens merging into rooflights with a frameless connection create a contemporary feel.
