    Side Infill Extensions

In our series of key projects that have informed our work over our twenty years of practice we look at a fully glazed side extension.  The project is located in St Dionis Road in Fulham.  The project is important firstly because of the way in which a simple extension serves to transform our clients home and secondly the use of glass in the creation of a light filled and contemporary interior.

A much smaller project than the basement extension at Ellerby Street  recently reviewed. Nonetheless it is the simple and elegant detailing of the glazing that ensures a successful design.  It is this understanding of how to put glazed structures together efficiently and elegantly that characterises our work.  An essential part of the process is the developing of the design with the glazing Sub Contractor and this relationship is important.  Over the years we have developed excellent working relationships with glazing companies such as Max Light.  Prior to manufacture they will provide a ‘shop drawing’ for us to comment on.  This is a key part of the quality control process.

This knowledge has enabled us to go onto design a wide variety of glazed structures, such as a glass cube at Hurlingham Road in Fulham housing the feature basement stair.  Or a similar frameless glass cube at our project at Woodsford Square in Holland  Park.

The side infill extension at St Dionis Road takes a typical terraced house with a small kitchen and poor connection with the garden and creates a spacious, light filled contemporary house with the inside opening up onto the garden both visually and physically and a far improved flow between spaces.
