Narrow House

Battersea

Private Residential

A tight urban site between two buildings, each differing greatly in scale, has provided the opportunity for designing a slender house with a colourful and contemporary glazed facade.

Behind the glazed facade, the building is realised as a series of simple floor plates linked by a top-lit stair. The key element is the modern facade, and this is where the budget would be focused. By moving the staircases and circulation to the rear of the building, we are able to maximise the living space in the modern interior. A glazed enclosure around the staircase core at the back is protected by exterior wooden slats that provide privacy as well as facilitating the filtering of sunlight.

Summary

A Narrow House in Battersea

The success of this new house in Battersea is in how the façade works allied to the incorporation of the stair well.  Both help to define the internal spaces and serve to create a light filled and contemporary design.

Guide to House Design

When designing houses where the stair and its relationship to glazed screens and rooflights is a key feature, then we find that designing and developing the project via a cross section is very useful and this is often the starting point.  Followed by further development with a 3D computer model.

Examples of House Design

Our portfolio of house design has many examples of sections, often drawn by hand as a first response to the design brief and site conditions.
