Brighton Side Extension
Shape Architecture has just submitted a planning application for a side infill extension in Brighton. As a practice we have a great deal of experience in this type of extension and recognise how a relatively small addition can help transform the space and much improve our client’s enjoyment of their home.
Transform Your Property
The side returns of most terraced house are poor quality external spaces. They typically run parallel to a narrow kitchen which itself has little visual nor actual connection with the garden beyond. The addition of a simple side extension will transform the space, creating a large light filled kitchen and dining room with far improved access to the garden. A series of roof lights set in the extension roof will fill the interior with light. As will a series of bi-fold or sliding doors giving onto the garden.
Glass and Transparency
There are many opportunities to design elegant glazing in these projects. Glass features such as a vertical glass panel in the rear elevation which connects with a roof light with a frameless ‘glass to glass’ detail. We have designed a number of side returns with this detail and it is always an elegant and subtle feature. We have longstanding relationships with very good glazing companies such as Maxlight and this contributes to a successful installation. Our experience means that what is being designed at the very outset is technically achievable.
The Design Process
Key to the design process is the use of computer modelling to illustrate the external appearance and the design of the interior. The impact in terms of size and location of roof lights can be explored and clearly communicated to our clients. Our proposals brochure issued to our client will include four or five design options described with a series of 2D drawings and 3D images, alongside notes explaining the thinking behind each design option. Once our client has had a chance to digest the proposals then our Director will visit and discuss the options. This will then generate a revised preferred option which again will be drawn in 2D and 3D and issued as an updated proposal brochure to our clients for any last comments. Following which we will prepare the planning drawings and submit the planning application on behalf of our clients.
