Residential Architecture in Fulham
Shape Architecture carries out residential work throughout Fulham. Ranging from extensions of all types to roof terrace projects, basement extensions, internal refurbishment and energy efficiency upgrades. We also carry out many listed building projects creating contemporary light filled spaces and it is sense of light and transparency that characterises our work.

Case Study 01: Wraparound Extension in St Dionis Road, Fulham
Our project in St Dionis Road in Fulham involves the modernisation of a house to create a light bright and contemporary home. An extensive glass rooflight is used to flood the interior with light at Ground Floor. Full width glazed doors open up onto the small rear garden also designed by Shape Architecture. At the upper level the conversion of the loft and addition of a pod room add further accommodation. At first floor level a Master bedroom with en-suite and walk-in-wardrobe is added.

Case Study 02: Rear Extension in Kempson Road, Fulham
Our project in Kempson Road combines the enlargement of a lower ground floor with a rear ground floor extension to create a more practical and light-filled home. Careful attention was given to the sensitive nature of the two-storey side return extension, as the property is stepped up from its neighbours. Planning permission was secured at the first attempt, and the resulting design enhances the flow of the house, adds valuable space, and strengthens the connection between the interior and garden.

Case Study 03: Basement Extension in Ellerby Street 02, Fulham
This Fulham project focuses on creating space and light through a striking basement stair design. Positioned beneath a large rooflight, the stair floods the basement with natural light and supports natural ventilation. Its placement also allows the front study to enjoy views across the stair void towards the garden, enhancing the sense of openness. Designed in collaboration with the site joiner, the stair is both elegant and functional. A secondary stair leading from the rear lightwell to the garden features a patterned glass platform, adding another refined detail to this light-filled home.

Case Study 04: Apartment Reworking at Cavaye House, Fulham
At Cavaye House, we transformed a duplex flat through extensions at both levels and a complete reworking of the interior. The result is a bright and contemporary home with new bathrooms, a walk-in wardrobe master en-suite, and bespoke furniture throughout. A refined palette of materials and colours enhances the sense of space and light, creating an elegant and cohesive interior.

Case Study 05: Roof Terrace in Danehurst Road, Fulham
This Fulham project transformed the top floor of a terraced house by adding a roof terrace, providing much-needed outdoor space for an upper floor flat with no garden. Alongside the terrace, a dormer was added to the converted loft to create an en-suite. The design carefully balanced planning sensitivities such as overlooking, noise, and detailing of the terrace enclosure, resulting in a contemporary and valuable addition to the home.

Case Study 06: Garden Room at Acfold Road, Fulham
This Fulham garden studio at Acfold Road transforms an existing structure by retaining several walls while replacing the floor and roof with a highly insulated construction. New rooflights, glazed panels, and doors flood the space with daylight and connect it to the garden. Careful brick detailing enhances the design, resulting in a contemporary and efficient small structure that adds both practicality and character to the property.

Case Study 07: Glazed Wraparound Extension at Winchendon Road, Fulham
This wrap around extension at Winchendon Road serves to totally transform a ground floor flat. Contemporary and light filled, the extension creates a spacious kitchen and living space with excellent physical and visual connection with the garden. The material treatment of the roof is of interest, as where we often use green sedum roofs with rooflights set within, this approach sees a glazed roof providing a strong feeling of space and openness and flooding the interior with natural light. As soon as you enter the space you are very aware of the garden and sky and the play of light and shadow. The plan layout is now simpler and the connection between the interior and garden is much improved. A further bathroom and utility space are also added to the existing small basement.

Glass and Transparency

Glass and Transparency.
Common to all our projects is the use of glass to bring natural light into all parts of a building and to provide a better visual and physical connection between the Interior and exterior. These vary from structural glass panels to glass cubes such as at Hurlingham Road basement and much else in between.
“Shape Architecture have successfully met the criteria laid down in a number of ways including the creation of an interior that works around the principles of transparency, openness and light. Their attention to detail was exemplary.”
– Mr. P Gillies , Transformation of Listed Apartment

Roof Terraces

Fulham Roof Terraces
Shape Architecture has been successful in obtaining planning permission for roof terraces throughout London. These vary from those to Listed Buildings such as Florin Court, to a variety of Mews houses. In Fulham our projects include a roof terrace in Danehurst Road to a typical terraced house. In this instance valuable outdoor space is provided to a Duplex flat. We have also recently completed a similar terrace to another Duplex flat in Cavaye House on Fulham Road.

“Jason and Robin were very helpful in coming up with some lovely designs for a terrace – they were very quick with the turnaround and communicated with me clearly throughout the process!”
-Isabelle Norton

Basements

Fulham Basements
A successful basement extension rests on the bringing in of natural light into the interior, which is key in creating a quality of space and this is where we have much experience. Our Fulham basement projects form an important part of our portfolio of work. We have carried out over 30 basement projects throughout London, 15 of which are in Fulham, where our very first basement project in Ellerby street was undertaken. Our basement extensions range from those to mews properties, to houses and below gardens and flats.

“Jason and the team helped us design our dream home in London and where always at hand to help and hear our ideas to get the outcome we desired. We appreciated how willing they where to adapt and the good contacts they had with the planners and builders. Thanks!”
-Ivan Dexeus

Communication

Client Communication
We communicate clearly to our clients, and this is the foundation for a successful project. All designs, no matter what size, are developed in 3D alongside freehand drawing. A typical concept proposals brochure will have 4 or 5 different options described in 3D, 2D and freehand drawings and this will be the basis for discussion with the Client as we determine the preferred design.

Jason Wren RIBA, ARB, BA Hons, Dip Arch, Msc
I completed my architectural degrees at the University of Brighton, graduating in 1992 and then returning to take my Part 3 professional qualifications. I also took a Master of Science Degree in Computer Visualisation at the University of Dundee graduating in 1993. Following this I moved to London and for twelve years worked at leading architectural practices rising to Associate Director Level and working on a wide range of groundbreaking sustainable projects in the school and community sectors.
I established Shape Architecture in 2006, to focus on a high-quality design led and Client focussed approach to residential projects. Informed by expertise in sustainable design and a wide range of methods of construction. What interests me in the work we do is its breadth and diversity both in location and project type and size. We make every effort to keep this approach at the core of what we do. I also enjoy working alongside a range of talented consultants who support us in our work, most of whom we have been working with for twenty years or more.
Outside of practice life, I enjoy painting, drawing, and walking. Often accompanied by Sid, our Fox Terrier.
