Brighton Extension and Refurbishment
Located in the heart of Brighton, just beside the historic Hippodrome, this distinctive property at Ship Street Gardens presented a unique opportunity for transformation. With a vaulted basement and strong architectural character, the house offered untapped potential to become a modern, light-filled family home.
Shape Architecture was appointed to rethink the layout and enhance the home’s functionality, flow, and connection to the garden. The existing arrangement lacked cohesion, with rooms feeling disconnected and the outdoor space isolated from the main living areas.
Our design introduces a refined rear extension that not only opens up the ground floor to the garden but also connects seamlessly with the basement level. Through this intervention, we’ve brought daylight into previously darker areas and created direct garden access from below, enhancing both practicality and spatial experience.
Internally, the house has been reconfigured to provide ample storage and improve circulation throughout. At the top of the home, a new dormer extension maximises space in the loft while large, triangular glazed windows introduce natural light and striking views — turning a once underused space into a bright and inviting room.
Summary
Extensions and Refurbishment, Brighton
Here success should be measured in taking a quite unique property and realising its potential. Allied to the integration of the existing vaulted basement with the rest of the property. As with many of our projects it is the introduction and design of a feature stair linking the existing vaulted basement to the ground floor and garden beyond that characterizes the design.
Guide to Stair Design
Our stairs are very often a feature of a space, sculptural in their form or straightforward and simply elegant. Very often flooding a space with daylight. Always well detailed.
Examples of Stair Design
Our portfolio of projects includes a vast array of stair designs illustrating a wide variety of form, material, detail and colour.
