Upcycle and Recycle
Shape Architecture has worked on a number of projects where the use of recycled materials and the upcycling of products have formed a key part of our client’s brief. These have been in both the residential and community sectors.
Reduce Waste
Both recycling and upcycling keep waste out of land fill sites. Upcycling arguably gives most scope for creative design. Recycling is an equally environmentally responsible approach and addresses the re-use of bulk waste materials such as glass and plastics. Our EcoShed community buildings in Hammersmith and our house in Hastings Old Town are good examples and we describe them below.
Upcycle and recycle on a residential project
Our project in Hastings saw the extension and reworking of a house that was configured as two separate flats. We worked closely with our client in sourcing items that could be upcycled. The architectural salvage shop, Retrouvius, proved to be a valuable source of items that found their way into our Hastings project. All with a story to tell.
Upcycle and recycle on a community project
Both our EcoShed projects for the Hammersmith Community Gardens Association followed a sustainable brief an important part of which was the recycling of materials. A series of second hand doors provided the basis of the kitchen, a variety of seats and storage. Sinks and floor finishes were all reclaimed. It helped that our Contractor was very involved in this approach and helped source a number of items.
