Cavendish House
Brighton
Private Residential | Roof Terrace
The development of the rooftop to Cavendish House on Brighton Seafront is a very interesting project.
Cavendish House is situated on Brighton seafront. Shape Architecture secured planning permission to convert a flat roof into a terrace with views over the sea.
Our Client at Cavendish House writes:
Jason was exceptional from start to end. He spent time really listening to what I wanted giving practical useful advice on a project that was going to prove difficult obtaining planning permission for. Jason gave me innovative ideas. Due to his experience and knowledge he managed to secure planning permission on appeal without 3rd party involvement ! Fees are broken down for each stage of the whole process so there is no misunderstanding relating to the costs and great attention is given to time deadlines. It’s been great working with Jason and his Enthusiastic team. I would highly recommend Shape Architecture.
Creating a beautiful roof terrace garden from an unused space
The brief was to convert an underused rooftop into a terrace. The existing flat roof enjoyed wonderful views across Brighton and the South Downs. Our proposal sees the introduction of new balustrading and hard landscaping to form a unique external space at the heart of Brighton and Hove, transforming the quality of life of our clients.
Summary
Brighton Roof Terrace
The success of this roof terrace in Brighton is clear. A very large roof extension added to an upper level flat with views of the sea transforms the property.
How to Design a Roof Terrace
In terms of planning, roof terraces can be sensitive with concerns including noise and overlooking, alongside the balustrading treatment and the general impact on the streetscene. Local precedent that is planning approved is always a benefit. We have though achieved planning permission where no obvious precedent exists ad simply argued the case. We find the submission of a Pre-App prior to a full planning application a very useful route whereby we can ‘test the water’ with several options and valuable feedback received that will inform a full application.
Examples of Roof Terrace Projects
Our work encompasses roof terraces of all types and size throughout Brighton and London. From roof terraces to listed buildings and in those in conservation areas. To houses, individual flats and mews properties.
