Battersea Roof Terrace

Shape Architecture was appointed on this roof terrace project in Battersea on the basis of our experience of roof terraces throughout London coupled with our experience of bringing light into spaces and is now complete. As with a number of our roof terrace extensions in London, a terraced property presents several challenges, primarily around access and natural light into the property. A largely glazed structure provides a route for a new stair to the terrace and the integrated glazing floods the interior with natural light, integrating both the outside and the inside spaces well. Computer modelling has once more helped to investigate a series of design options and enabled us to communicate these clearly to our Clients.

Summary

Roof Terrace, Battersea

The success of this Battersea roof terrace is that it has added valuable external space to a house that only had a very small rear garden.  The new roof terrace is accessed by a new stair with large roof light over and adds high quality elegant space to the property.

Guide to Roof Terraces in Battersea

The key issue in roof terrace design is that of overlooking.  A planning application should address this  and demonstrate how overlooking is not an issue due to setting back the balustrading for example. The setting out of sight lines and demonstration of the neighbouring context is important too.
