Acton Architects
Our practice undertakes projects of all sizes big or small across the Residential Sector. Each project is a response to the site, brief and budget and is underscored by our creative thinking and over 20 years of experience in designing sustainable buildings.
Our fees are competitive and further broken down into RIBA work stages for clarity and flexibility.
Our Services
Shape Architecture is happy to tailor its services to suit our clients’ requirements. We also offer additional services such as interior, bespoke furniture and garden design. A full service would see us taking the brief and surveying the property through to completion on site and dealing with the final account.

Case Study 01: Grove Avenue Extensions
This project transformed a standard semi-detached house in Grove Avenue in Ealing – which sat on a sloping site with long uninterrupted views towards parkland. This green setting and the nature of the sloping site provided the inspiration for the design proposals for which planning permission was granted at the first attempt. This was the generation of a proposal of a series of stepped greens sedum roofs that brought the landscape into the building. The stepped roofs also included a number of rooflights to flood the interior with daylight.

Case Study 02: Argyle Road
Our extension at Argyle Road in Ealing remains one of our largest extension projects. Gaining planning permissions via the prior approval process it extends some six metres and occupies the full width of the property. The transformation of the property is clearly evident. A light and bright contemporary interior is created filled with light via numerous rooflights.

Case Study 03: Rear Extension in Hopefiled Lodge
Following the success of our refurbishment of a house in Ealing our clients there recommended Shape Architecture to a newly arrived neighbour also looking to create a contemporary light filled space with the addition of a rear extension.
The addition of a rear extension adds valuable floor space and enables more light to be brought into the interior via the use of rooflights and this is explored in various ways and always with 3D models.
Our Client at Hopefield Lodge writes:
“I highly recommend Jason and his team for their professional and attentive support on every stage of my project. Not only are they creative but they listen and take on board your ideas, needs and wants. The high quality of their drawings has been remarked upon by all the builders I have shown them to.”

Case Study 04: Beaufort Close
Our project at Beaufort Close is a two storey extension to a house in a prominent Conservation Area in Ealing – the Hanger Hill (Haymills) Conservation Area. This project replaces a garage with a two-storey side extension that transforms both the ground and first floors. Careful design within the conservation area ensured the extension sits comfortably in its setting, with the façade set back and roof ridge stepped down to reduce impact.

Case Study 05: Wraparound Extension in St Dionis Road
Our project in St Dionis Road in Fulham involves the modernisation of a house to create a light bright and contemporary home. An extensive glass rooflight is used to flood the interior with light at Ground Floor. Full width glazed doors open up onto the small rear garden also designed by Shape Architecture. At the upper level the conversion of the loft and addition of a pod room add further accommodation. At first floor level a Master bedroom with en-suite and walk-in-wardrobe is added.

Case Study 06: Rear Extension in Kempson Road
Our project in Kempson Road combines the enlargement of a lower ground floor with a rear ground floor extension to create a more practical and light-filled home. Careful attention was given to the sensitive nature of the two-storey side return extension, as the property is stepped up from its neighbours. Planning permission was secured at the first attempt, and the resulting design enhances the flow of the house, adds valuable space, and strengthens the connection between the interior and garden.

Case Study 07: Basement Extension in Ellerby Street 02
This Fulham project focuses on creating space and light through a striking basement stair design. Positioned beneath a large rooflight, the stair floods the basement with natural light and supports natural ventilation. Its placement also allows the front study to enjoy views across the stair void towards the garden, enhancing the sense of openness. Designed in collaboration with the site joiner, the stair is both elegant and functional. A secondary stair leading from the rear lightwell to the garden features a patterned glass platform, adding another refined detail to this light-filled home.

Case Study 08: Apartment Reworking at Cavaye House
At Cavaye House, we transformed a duplex flat through extensions at both levels and a complete reworking of the interior. The result is a bright and contemporary home with new bathrooms, a walk-in wardrobe master en-suite, and bespoke furniture throughout. A refined palette of materials and colours enhances the sense of space and light, creating an elegant and cohesive interior.

Case Study 09: Roof Terrace in Danehurst Road
This Fulham project transformed the top floor of a terraced house by adding a roof terrace, providing much-needed outdoor space for an upper floor flat with no garden. Alongside the terrace, a dormer was added to the converted loft to create an en-suite. The design carefully balanced planning sensitivities such as overlooking, noise, and detailing of the terrace enclosure, resulting in a contemporary and valuable addition to the home.

Case Study 10: Garden Room at Acfold Road
This Fulham garden studio at Acfold Road transforms an existing structure by retaining several walls while replacing the floor and roof with a highly insulated construction. New rooflights, glazed panels, and doors flood the space with daylight and connect it to the garden. Careful brick detailing enhances the design, resulting in a contemporary and efficient small structure that adds both practicality and character to the property.

Glass and Transparency

Glass and Transparency
Common to all our projects is the use of glass to bring natural light into all parts of a project and to provide a better visual and physical connection between the Interior and exterior. These vary from structural glass panels set into the floor to glass cubes housing stairs. Large scale glazed panels and rooflights feature in our projects.

Extensions

Acton Extensions
We carry out house extensions of all types which all serve to transform a home. Light bright contemporary interiors are formed with excellent views onto gardens beyond. Very often the roof is a green sedum roof with an elegant rooflight set within. This helps the extension merge into the garden when viewed from floor levels above. We will design 3 or 4 options to discuss with our clients and all designs use 3D graphics to ensure clear communication.

Roof Terraces

Acton Roof Terraces
Shape Architecture has been successful in obtaining planning permission for roof terraces throughout London. These vary from those to Listed Buildings such as Florin Court, to a variety of Mews houses. Our portfolio of roof terrace projects also include those to a typical terraced house and in several instances the house is divided into flats and the provision of a roof terrace to the upper floor flat is even more beneficial.

Basements

Acton Basement Extensions
Our basement projects form an important part of our portfolio of work. We have carried out over 30 basement projects throughout London. Our basement extensions range from those to mews properties, to houses and below gardens and flats.
A successful basement extension rests on the bringing in of natural light into the interior, which is key in creating a quality of space and this is where we have much experience. Added to this is the design of the stair which might be sat below a glazed section of roof. Thereafter the arrangement of rooms and their relationship with lightwells is important to consider.

Interior Design

Acton Interior Design
Shape Architecture has extensive experience in Interior Design and bespoke furniture design which we bring to all our projects. We are experienced in interior lighting design and are happy to advise on all aspects of the use of colour.

Communication

Client Communication
We communicate clearly to our clients, and this is the foundation for a successful project. All designs, no matter what size, are developed in 3D alongside freehand drawing. A typical concept proposals brochure will have 4 or 5 different options described in 3D, 2D and freehand drawings and this will be the basis for discussion with the Client as we determine the preferred design.
