Fulham Basement Conversion: Clonmel Road
Shape Architecture has been awarded a new commission for a basement conversion in Fulham. Our clients selected Shape Architecture having researched successful planning applications for similar basement projects in Fulham; projects that we have a lot of experience with. The brief has asked that a planning application be submitted within 3 weeks of having started the project which we have been able to do. Our procedures and experience gained from having designed and constructed 15 basement conversions in London over the last several years has enabled Shape Architecture to design the project over this timescale.
London Basement Conversions
This project in Clonmel Road includes a basement and associated lightwells, extensions at ground floor and roof level and complete internal refurbishment. The range of accommodation is very similar to a number of our Fulham basement conversions. The building is presently in a semi derelict state and set out with a number of small and oddly shaped rooms. The proposed design will open up the interior and fill it with light.
A Guide to Basement Design: Stairs and Natural Light
A feature of the design proposal is the location and design of the internal basement stair and the way in which it provides light, views and sense of space at both basement level and ground floor. This is achieved by setting the stair perpendicular to the party wall, whereby a large rooflight can be set over the half landing to the same dimensions of the half landing. This fills the mid section of the basement conversion with daylight and views out towards the sky. As the stair reaches basement level it is framed by glass screens to ensure that the basement feels light, bright and spacious. This composition is completed by a timber stair that will utilise a dark wood for treads and risers.
A Guide to Basement Design: Garden Lightwell
Our Fulham basement conversions have featured a number of garden lightwells in various designs. In this project the light well is crossed by a glass bridge. A key feature of the light well is at the basement level where a studio space is located under the garden with a glazed facade giving onto the light well. We have previously obtained planning permission for this arrangement on another basement conversion in Fulham in Cloncurry Street.
