Shape Architecture has just been instructed to design a new basement conversion in Fulham in Clonmel Road. Our client had researched planning permissions for basement projects in Fulham and had seen a number of our basement conversions.
Fulham Basement Conversion
The client has asked that the planning permission is submitted quickly and to achieve this we are following our well established procedure for basement extensions. The first step is to carry out a digital dimensional and photographic survey which Shape Architecture undertakes in-house. A set of existing plans, sections and elevations are then produced, following which a 3D computer model is made of the existing building. In parallel we are researching all recent planning applications for basement extensions in this road and the neighbouring roads. Having built and obtained planning permission for a large number of Fulham basement conversions we have a wealth of knowledge of what the planning department will accept and this helps us liaise with the client clearly and quickly and provide a series of options for consideration. We will visit the duty planner and discuss the proposed design prior to submission to ensure that the proposal will be acceptable to the planning department.
The project is at present a very dark interior and a key design challenge will be the introduction of light throughout the project. In all our basement conversions in London we use computer graphics to illustrate the nature of the space and also to model the effect of natural light and how enlarging or moving a rooflight can allow a greater penetration of sunlight into an interior.
London Basement Conversions: Stairs
In order to bring light into the project we have located a new stair to the basement in the middle of the floor plan and added a large scale roof light over the stairs and around the stairs a series of glass screens are set. The stair itself can be finished in dark wood to complete the composition. This has been an approach common to many London basement conversions including several of our basements in Fulham and has always proved to be a successful combination of light, space, views and feature stair.
