Fulham Basement Extension
Shape Architecture has just been instructed to design a new basement extension in Fulham. The project is located in Fulham’s alphabet streets where we have previously designed and built many basement extensions.

A key part of the brief for this Fulham basement extension is to ensure that the basement is well integrated into the rest of the property and the garden. Our success in achieving this with other Fulham basements was an important factor in our being chosen for this project. Two key features that have an impact on the integration of internal spaces are the location and design of the internal stair and that of the basement lightwell. The stair also provides a valuable source of natural light alongside views and a sense of space. We have in other Fulham basement extensions designed the stair as a key feature and linked it to other elements such as rooflights set over it. The size and location of lightwells, particularly the ‘garden’ lightwell and a lightwell set in the middle of the house, also provide valuable daylight and natural ventilation alongside views and access to other spaces both internal and external. Views and glimpses of the rest of the property, combined with a sense of space, contribute immensely to the integration of a basement extension with other parts of a house. At Shape Architecture our use of 3D computer models to explore and explain these issues help to create successful basement extension projects.
