West London Architects

Recent projects in Westminster include the extensive remodelling and internal refurbishment of a large luxury apartment in Grosvenor Square, Westminster. Here, we opened up the existing flat to give a much greater sense of light and space. This involved the demolition of a number of walls and the formation of a master suite with elegant fitted wardrobes and bathroom. The introduction of mirrored sliding folding doors between the reception rooms provides an elegant way of dividing the spaces and also serves to reflect light and views around the flat. One of the most successful features of the project has been the replacement of the large single glazed sash windows giving onto Grosvenor Square with new double glazed windows, following a successful planning application. With the prominent location, these windows had to match the appearance of the existing windows exactly in order to fit in with the vernacular Westminster architecture, and thanks to our good working relationship with specialist contractors and the planners in Westminster, we were able to successfully gain planning permission. This permission allowed us to ensure a high quality finish and a vastly improved thermal and acoustic performance. Similarly, planning permission was granted for the replacement of the single glazed Crittall windows to the rear of the property.

As Westminster Architects, Shape Architecture has recently completed the complete refurbishment and redesign of a large apartment looking out onto Grosvenor Square. Whilst the existing reception room was large and immediately impressive, the bathrooms, bedrooms, hall and kitchen were small and badly lit spaces. With the removal of a number of internal walls we have been able to create a Master Suite incorporating a large en-suite bathroom and a ‘wall’ of bespoke wardrobes dividing the bedroom and en-suite. Throughout the project Shape Architecture designed a range of bespoke furniture ranging from wardrobes to vanity units, desks and seats. Working throughout London and particularly as architects in Westminster we are very experienced in designing original items of furniture for our clients.

St. James Place

In Westminster Architects are often asked to refurbish and update existing apartments of all types and sizes, as we recently did at Grosvenor Square.  Following the success of this project we were appointed to undertake a similar project to a large apartment in St. James Place overlooking Green Park. As with other projects it is important to realise the qualities that the existing interior has and ensure these are maximised to be key features of the new project. A series of new contemporary bathrooms and en-suites have been added to the apartment. A study and utility room have been created, and the kitchen relocated to the Green Park side of the property. Simple high quality materials have been used throughout, with an emphasis on creating light bright interior spaces.  As at our project in Grosvenor Square we obtained a series of planning permissions to upgrade the single glazed Critall windows to double glazed versions.  Much effort was also made in the detailing to provide a good level of sound insulation.

Inverness Terrace

Working as Architects in Westminster we have undertaken extensions to listed buildings.  At Inverness Terrace Shape Architecture was appointed to extend and refurbish a Ground Floor Flat in a listed Building.  The brief asked for an additional bedroom with en-suite facilities and the general opening up of the interior to create a light bright space.  We obtained listed building consent to undertake this work.  The flat is now a two bed flat with additional bathroom, a lighter and more spacious feel and a much improved connection between the interior and the Courtyard garden beyond.

Montagu Square

When seen through the eyes of Architects, Westminster provides a diverse range of projects both in type and scale. In Montagu Square we have been asked to redesign a series of courtyard spaces and link this with a new kitchen and dining room.  We produced a wide range of computer models to explore and discuss this project and particularly to develop a series of components and materials for the courtyards in a variety of materials

Randolph Avenue

Our Architecture in Westminster sometimes concerns itself solely with matters of energy performance of a dwelling and how it can be best improved.  Where we have obtained planning permission in projects such as at Grosvenor Square to upgrade single glazed windows to double glazed versions, we have also now underaken two projects in Randolph Avenue to do the same.  One for a single flat and another for four flats in one building.  The addition of double glazed windows will make a great difference to the energy performance of the property.  We have at other projects also lined the existing solid brickwork walls with a bonded insulation board and this also has a real benefit in respect of reducing heat loss.

Side and Rear Extensions in Westminster

At Shape Architecture we have worked on very many extensions, both side and rear and wrap around extensions either as projects in their own right or as a part of a larger project. These projects add valuable additional floor space and provide opportunities to provide an enhanced visual and physical connection between the inside and outside and to bring more daylight into the interior through various rooflights.
